Summer is finally here. For lots of Missourians, Memorial Day marks the beginning of fun-filled months with plenty of backyard barbecues, float trips and excursions to the neighborhood pool. Not sure how to spend your three-day Memorial Day Weekend? Bambinos will be closed on Sunday and Monday to spend time with family and friends, but there’s still plenty to do in the Springfield area. We’ve rounded up the best Memorial Day activities to help you plan a weekend full of fun under the sun.
Make a Splash
The Springfield area’s public pools are great places to cool off and enjoy the summer sun. Springfield’s public pools officially open this Saturday, May 25, which means it’s time to start inflating your floaties. Patrons can also score a discount on pool admission every day after 5:30 p.m. as part of the Park Board’s Splash & Sizzle promotion. Make sure to check the Park Board’s website for the pool schedule, as pools are occasionally closed for routine maintenance.
Bluegrass & BBQ
What better way to celebrate Memorial Day than with a trip to the most patriotic destination in the Ozarks? Silver Dollar City’s Bluegrass & BBQ festival goes through May 27, offering a heaping helping of down-home bluegrass tunes from more than 60 bands including Rhonda Vincent & The Rage and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. The festival also includes some of the area’s best barbecue food. Finally, guests can enjoy a nightly outdoor concert in Silver Dollar City’s Echo Hollow Amphitheatre, where you and the family can kick back and relax under the stars. The concert series is included with your theme park admission, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing tickets ahead of time.
Outdoorsy families will love Bass Pro Shops’ Go Outdoors Kids Weekend event taking place May 25 and 26. Bring the little ones to Bass Pro for this free event, which includes all kinds of outdoorsy fun like kid-friendly crafts, giveaways – even a woodsy photo booth.
Plan a Float
The Ozarks are full of gorgeous waterways that are just waiting to be explored. Now that the weather is warming up, it’s the perfect time to get out for that family float trip you’ve been talking about. Whether you want to keep it local with a quick float down the James River or head a few hours south to Arkansas to traverse the gorgeous Buffalo River, a float trip is a recipe for the perfect Memorial Day Weekend. Not sure where to start? Check out this roundup of the area’s 10 best float trips from 417 Magazine. The article outlines routes through the Big Piney River, Jack’s Fork, Current River, James River, Niangua and the North Fork in Missouri and the Kings River in Arkansas – just to name a few.
At its core, Memorial Day is about remembering the sacrifices brave men and women made to keep our country safe. This Memorial Day, take the family to Branson for a patriotic holiday weekend at Chateau on the Lake. The legendary lakefront hotel will host a full weekend of family-friendly activities including a backyard barbecue, campfire s’mores party and fireworks show in honor of our nation’s veterans.
