Can Eating Carbs Be Healthy? – Italian Restaurant in Springfield Missouri
It’s the age-old diet advice that fills pasta lovers with dread- Cut out carbohydrates to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle. If you’re anything like us, cutting out carbs is like cutting out a piece of your soul. After all, what’s life without pasta? Luckily, there’s good news for us carb lovers. A recent study published in the Lancet Public Health Journal found that eating carbs can actually increase your lifespan.
The Study
A recent study published in the Lancet Public Health Journal measured the lifespans of individuals following low-carb diets—which replace carbs with animal-based proteins and fats—against the lifespans of individuals who eat extremely high-carb diets. The study then took into account individuals who eat a moderate amount of carbohydrates—about half of their daily calorie intake. After studying the individuals for 25 years, the results showed that eating carbohydrates in moderation seems to be a great choice for overall health and longevity.
The Evidence
The study found a few possible reasons for the conclusion. Overall, the individuals on the higher end of the scale—those consuming large amounts of refined carbohydrates, that is—weren’t consuming enough food with high nutritional value, which can lead to a variety of health problems later in life. Meanwhile, individuals who cut out carbs completely tended to replace carbs with meat and dairy products, which may increase the risk of heart disease and early death when consumed in large amounts. On average, individuals who consumed a moderate amount of carbs as part of a well-balanced diet and healthy lifestyle lived at least four years longer than the other study subjects. Eating pasta and enjoying a longer life? Count us in.
The Verdict: Moderation Is Key
Overall, the study found that getting half of your daily calories from carbs can significantly lower your risk of early death.
